After a few
weeks, Students of Houston ISD are expected to return to former libraries that
have now been transformed into disciplinary spaces.
According to the new Superintendent of New School System (NES), Mike Miles announced that at the 28 original schools, this imitative has been made, and the librarian and media specialist positions of those schools will be eliminated under this reform program. Moreover, he further added comparatively the librarian and media specialist positive are alike. However, librarians typically possess an advanced degree in library science.
Houston Independent
School District said that the fifty-seven (57) additional schools who chose to
join in New School System will be assessed on an individual basis, and we recognize
the importance of several programs associated related to libraries and will
make efforts to keep those valuable services of offerings.
One of the Houston
Independent School District parents, Malaki Sims expressed his concern about
this shocking decision and that he is worried about the student who are
studying there. Further, he added that this decision is absurd to me. He recalled
his schooling days when I grew up and used to go to the library. I need
guidance and read books based on my interests. The major role of a librarian is
to guide you and assist you in improving your comprehension and reading skills.
A worker namely
Deborah Hall who spent almost 40 years in HISD showed her astonishment and
said: “I am baffled that it happened
quickly. I could not get why this administration ignores the significance of
libraries. Libraries are not merely the collection of books but more than that.
It aims to connect the reader to the right book. Moreover, you can determine how to address the student’s needs by
talking to the student.”
Houston Independent
School District clarified that the employees whose positions were removed are allowed
to work in libraries on other district campuses that are not under NES
campuses.
